Photoshop Brushes Part One by ceruleanvii Photoshop Brushes Part One by ceruleanvii
I am in the process of writing this up for someone else and decided to adapt it for a DA tutorial. This first part covers the basics of how PS brushes work and their settings. The second part is here: [link] and will cover customization and brush blending modes and answer some questions. A lot of this I've already gone over in various forms and places, but now I'm gathering it all under one roof, so to speak.

See any mistakes, inaccuracies, typos, confusing parts? Just let me know - and thanks!

Note: None of these deal with the CS5 natural media brushes. I'll probably write up a separate document on those.

edit 10/28/10 - thanks very much for the DD on this tutorial, glad people have found it helpful! And thanks very much Aaraujo for suggesting it and shelldevil for featuring it!

Photoshop Brushes Part One by *ceruleanvii Suggester Says: It's very helpful and really break the brushes' parameters down in a way everyone can understand! It's important to know those, since people sometimes overlook how helpful tweaking the parameters might be. And now it's easy to customize your brushes and get a better painting experience! WOW! This is amazing :) I just want to thank you so much for taking the time to do this! Most people, if they explain anything at all, will basically just share their settings without really explaining what they mean. Your tutorial here really helps me understand in a way that I can actually take and manipulate without feeling like I'm just adjusting sliders blindfolded!

I like how you made available this reference for people; Photoshop brushes and how they are used can be very discouraging for people, especially those whom of which are beginners. Once again, very useful and easy-to-comprehend tutorial of something that is used quite often, great job and congratulations on your daily deviation!

This is amazing. I've seen quite a few tutorials on how to customize brushes in Photoshop, but none of them went into any sort of explanation as to possible uses as well as showing, in great detail, just what happens when certain parameters are tweaked.

This is, hands-down, the best brush tutorial I've ever seen, and I'm about to hop over to the second part just as soon as I finish typing this sentence. :)

Thanks so much for posting this!

about half of them are custom ones I've made, the rest are from all over... maybe sometime I'll compile them all in a list and make them available for upload - but really most of them are pretty standard brushes with a few things tweaked
