Artist's Comments

I wanted to do this painting in a style reminiscent of a renaissance religious painting.

Angel is messenger, demon cherub is harbinger of the apocalypse.

I haven't done a lot with two characters interacting so this seemed like a good excuse. Plus I've had the concept in my mind for years now. Glad to finally see it down on paper, so to speak.

The angel is not terribly tough/masculine, yes, this was intentional. Most sources say that traditionally, angels have no real gender, though they are usually depicted as beautiful beings with some male characteristics. Now don't ask me if they have navels, it looked too strange without one.

Painted with Photoshop CS2 (refs used for hands/baby leg)

edit 9/30: Wow, thanks for the DD on this, I'm amazed! And thanks so much to ~faerywitch and ^archanN for the suggestion and feature!

Awww, even as an angel he's taking care of the Demon-cherub - maybe he will raise him as a "good devil" :devilish:

Straight away I was reminded of those same classic paintings, so there's no need to worry about that anymore. And I too have a bad habit of storing old concepts for years...But the longer you wait, the better it'll look anyway, so there's an upside :floating:

I never noticed that Angels had no real definite gender until you mentioned it :slow: interesting. Really nice shading anyway! ;clap:

Usually I try to give constructive criticism (yes, I'm a terrible oddity here on DA), but I really can't think of much to say. I guess the roughness of the brushstrokes on the sheet falling away from him don't seem to match the smooth almost photo-realistic quality of the rest of the image, but that seems like a very small thing.

The, uh, positioning of the sheet seems a little low. Which, yeah, done intentionally, right. It is, for me, still a little awkward... Maybe that's just me.

But... Awesome work. I know, I know, you probably hear that a TON. It's true. I'm very impressed.

Yay, not many people realize angels don't have a defined gender. In fact, they don't really have a defined form, but when they appear to people it's always described as a man in white robes and other variants. Though they are attractive, haha. I think your angel looks more masculine than feminine, and "he's" very beautiful! i love the way you painte the skin tones, hair, and wings (basically everything). Lovely detailing in the cherub demon's wings! I think you succeeded in your goals, this is definitely reminiscent of Renaissance paintings.

Not enough time on my hands.
Yet, I have too much to spare.
The world seems to have time for the taking.
Yet, the world doesn't seem to give me enough.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I thought "renaissance," and then I read your subscription. XD Gorgeous work. I love with the smooth shading and skin tones. Nice textures, too, especially on the cherub's wings.

I first looked at the provided detail and saw the amazing eyes. I'm glad that you could still see the striking color in the full.

Congrats on getting it out. I know I'm thankful for that.

You did a great job! It gives the feel of oil painting. Very very well done. I wonder how long it took you for this piece.
